Backup and moving notes
How do I move my notes to a new phone?
On the old phone, open Settings > Backup & restore and create a backup. Send the backup file to the new phone in whatever way suits you. On the new phone, install Nota, open Settings > Backup & restore and choose Restore from file.
Does Nota sync between my devices?
No, by design. Nota has no account and no server, so notes stay on the device where you wrote them. To copy them to another device, use Backup & restore.
Is the backup file protected?
No. A backup is a ZIP file that is not encrypted, and it includes your locked notes. Keep it somewhere safe.
What happens to my notes if I delete the app?
Deleting the app deletes all of its data, and we have no copy. Create a backup first if you want to keep your notes.
How can I get my notes out of Nota?
Open a note, tap the ••• menu and choose Share to send it as text, PDF or Markdown. To take everything at once, use Settings > Export all notes, which makes a ZIP of Markdown files. That export leaves locked notes out; a backup includes them.
Notes
Where do deleted notes go?
To the Trash, which you can open from the Folders tab or from Settings. Deleted notes are kept there for 30 days.
How do I get back an earlier version of a note?
Open the note, tap the ••• menu and choose Version history. Nota keeps the previous text of a note when you edit it, and you can restore it from there.
How do I add a sketch?
Open a note and tap the pencil-and-ruler button in the editor toolbar. The sketch screen has a pen, pencil, highlighter and eraser, with colours, a stroke width slider, and undo and redo.
How do I add a photo?
Open a note and use the image button in the editor toolbar. You can choose a photo from your library or take one with the camera.
How do I pin, tag, move or archive a note?
Open the note and tap the ••• menu. From there you can pin it to the top, add tags, move it to a folder, change its background colour or archive it.
How do I find a note?
Open the Search tab and type a word. Use the Type, Tags and Date filters to narrow the results.
Locked notes
How do I lock a note?
Open the note, tap the ••• menu and choose Lock note. Your device needs a passcode, Face ID or fingerprint set up for this to work.
Is a locked note encrypted?
Locking makes Nota ask for Face ID, your fingerprint or the device passcode before showing the note. It is not a separate layer of encryption; the note relies on your device's own storage protection. The check is done by the operating system, and Nota never sees your biometric data.
Reminders
How do I set a reminder?
Open the note, tap the ••• menu and choose Remind me. Pick one of the quick times or set a date and time. You get a notification at that time.
My reminders are not arriving
Check that notifications are allowed for Nota in your device's system settings. On Android, reminders may arrive a few minutes late, because the system batches them.
Privacy and price
Do I need an account?
No. Nota has no sign-up.
Is Nota free?
Yes. There are no ads, no in-app purchases and no subscription.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Nota only uses the internet when you tap a link in a note or add an image by web address.
Can Playpal Apps see my notes?
No. Nota has no server and sends us nothing. See the privacy policy for the detail.
