Tilt & calibration

The accelerometer needs to learn how you hold the phone. Two minutes of fixes here cover 95% of cases.

The ball drifts on its own — I'm not tilting.

This is almost always a calibration drift. Re-calibrate via Main Menu → Settings → Re-calibrate Tilt. Hold your phone the way you'd normally play (sitting up, screen roughly perpendicular to your face) and tap Set as level. The game stores that orientation as "zero tilt" and rolls relative to it.

If you frequently switch between holding the phone upright and lying down, calibrating once for each posture isn't possible — pick the posture you'll play most. Most people play sitting up; calibrate sitting up.

The ball doesn't move at all.

Three things to try, in order:

  • Have you finished calibration? First launch goes through a calibration screen — you have to complete it once before the game state machine starts reading the accelerometer in gameplay. If you skipped it somehow, restart the app and re-do it.
  • Is the device locked in landscape externally? Twist and Turn Quest is portrait-only. If you're using a third-party orientation lock or a hardware mount that forces landscape, the accelerometer reads will read sideways and the ball may appear stuck against a wall.
  • Hardware accelerometer issue. Rare but possible on older devices. Try a different game that uses tilt input — if it also doesn't read tilt, the device's sensor needs servicing.
The ball rolls the wrong way.

You probably calibrated while holding the phone upside-down, or in a different orientation from how you play. Open Settings → Re-calibrate Tilt, hold the phone the way you actually play, and tap Set as level. The fresh baseline overrides the bad one.

Why is the ball so fast / slow?

Ball physics are tuned at the engine level — there's no per-user sensitivity slider, intentionally, because every level's difficulty depends on the speed being consistent across players. If the ball feels universally too fast for you, try holding the phone at a flatter angle (smaller tilt = smaller force); the system is force-based, not velocity-based, so smaller tilt = slower roll.

If you find the speed genuinely uncontrollable across multiple levels, that's worth a bug report — accelerometer scaling on some non-flagship Android devices is off by ~20% in either direction.

Modes & gameplay

Eight ways to play. Pick the one that fits the moment.

What's the difference between Quest, Survival, Beacon, Hunt, Constellation, and PRISM?
  • Quest — the core mode. Roll to the destination. Endless levels, increasing maze complexity.
  • Survival — race the red tide. A countdown stalks you through every maze; clear it before time runs out.
  • Beacon — the destination is invisible until you find it. The maze pulses dimly; the beacon glows brighter the closer you get.
  • Hunt — chase the wisp. Catch one, then the next, and the next. Chain them without bumping a wall for combo glow.
  • Constellation — touch the stars in numerical order. Wrong order shakes the screen; right order draws a line.
  • PRISM — round mazes on a polar grid. Every round, a different shape and concentric ring count. The most visually distinctive mode.
What is the Daily Challenge?

One curated level per day, the same level for every player worldwide. You get one attempt per 24 hours; your best time and stars are recorded. Daily resets at midnight in your device's local time.

The Daily Challenge is intentionally short — usually a 30-90 second run — so it fits between meetings or while waiting for coffee.

What's 2D Classic?

The original-feel mode preserved from the very first release. Top-down 2D maze, fixed camera, pure tilt-and-roll without the 3D camera following you. If you find the 3D modes disorienting, 2D Classic is the camera-stable alternative.

How does the star scoring work?

Stars are pure speed, the same in every mode:

  • 1★ — complete the level.
  • 2★ — finish under the generous par time.
  • 3★ — finish under the tight par time.

Par times scale with level number, so bigger mazes get proportionally more time. Wall bumps and gems don't affect stars — gems are collection flavour, and bumping walls is just part of rolling.

Total stars unlock ball skins: Gold at 10, Emerald at 30, Crimson at 60, Aurora at 100.

How do I switch ball skins?

Open Settings → Ball Skin. Tap any unlocked skin to equip it. Locked skins show their unlock threshold in stars; play more levels at higher star counts and they open up.

Remove Ads & purchases

Three bucks, once. Here's everything that surrounds that.

What does Remove Ads include?

A one-time, $2.99 in-app purchase that removes the interstitial ad that fires after every third level you complete — forever. There's no subscription, no second tier, and no feature gated behind it beyond the ads. Removes ads across every mode.

How do I restore my purchase on a new device?

Install Twist and Turn Quest, open Main Menu → Settings, and tap Restore Purchases. The app asks Apple or Google for your past purchase history and re-grants the entitlement. You must be signed into the same App Store / Play Store account you used to buy originally.

On iOS, Family Sharing also works — if a family-group member purchased Remove Ads, you'll receive it automatically the first time you launch on your own Apple ID.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds are handled by Apple or Google directly under their standard refund policies — Playpal Apps cannot directly issue refunds.

  • iOS — request via reportaproblem.apple.com.
  • Android — Play Store → Account icon → Payments & subscriptions → Budget & history → Request a refund.

If a store declines and you feel there's a legitimate issue with the app itself, email playpalapps2024@gmail.com and we'll advocate for you.

Is Remove Ads a subscription?

No. It's a one-time, non-consumable purchase. It never expires, never auto-renews, and is restorable on every device tied to your Apple ID or Google Play account.

I bought Remove Ads but I still see ads.

In order of likelihood:

  • The purchase succeeded on the store but the app hasn't checked yet. Open Settings → Restore Purchases to force a refresh. The ad code short-circuits the moment the entitlement is read.
  • You purchased on a different store account. Make sure your iOS device is signed into the same Apple ID, or your Android device is signed into the same Google account, that you used to buy.
  • Reset Progress was used and somehow wiped the flag. Reset Progress is designed to preserve Remove Ads — but if you experienced this, that's a real bug. Tap Restore Purchases and email us.
  • The cached ad fired right after purchase. The ad SDK preloads the next interstitial in the background; it gets cancelled when Remove Ads becomes true, but a race condition could theoretically fire one anyway. It won't happen again.

Data & privacy

Where your saves live, and how to control them.

How is my data stored — is it private?

All progress, stars, times, calibration, settings, and high scores are stored locally on your device, in Twist and Turn Quest's app sandbox, as user://save.json. We do not run servers, do not run analytics, and do not include third-party SDKs like Firebase, Mixpanel, or Amplitude. Delete the app and your data is gone — there is no remote copy.

For the full byte-level breakdown, including how AdMob and store-purchase verification work, see our privacy policy.

How do I wipe everything?

Two options: Settings → Reset Progress wipes the sandbox while keeping the app installed and keeps your Remove-Ads entitlement (good if you want a fresh start without losing the $2.99 you paid). Uninstalling the app removes the sandbox entirely on both iOS and Android, including every saved star and time — but you'd need to re-restore Remove Ads on next install.

Why does the app need to track me on iOS?

It doesn't need to. The ATT (App Tracking Transparency) prompt on first launch is asking whether you'll let the ad SDK use your device's IDFA for more relevant ads. You can tap Ask App Not to Track and every feature of the game still works perfectly — you'll just see less relevant ads. If you've already chosen, you can change it any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking → Twist and Turn Quest.

How do I manage ad personalisation?

On iOS, revoke App Tracking Transparency at the system level via iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking → Twist and Turn Quest. On Android, reset the advertising ID via Android Settings → Privacy → Ads. In the EEA / UK / Switzerland, you'll see Google's UMP consent dialog on first launch where you can decline personalised ads.

Motion & accessibility

If 3D camera motion bothers you, here's what to try.

The 3D modes make me feel queasy. What can I do?

Try this, in this order:

  • Switch to 2D Classic from the Mode Select screen. The camera is fixed top-down; no camera-follow motion at all.
  • Take a break every 10 minutes. The game's level loop is generally short, but a single Survival run can stretch on — stop between runs to let your inner ear settle.
  • Play in shorter sessions. Motion sickness intensity scales with continuous exposure. Five-minute sessions are usually fine even for sensitive players.
  • Play in good light. Counterintuitively, dim screens contribute to motion sickness because your peripheral vision has less stable reference. Brighten the screen and play in a well-lit room.

If you've tried all of the above and still can't enjoy the 3D modes, that's genuinely useful feedback — please email us. We can't change the laws of inner-ear physics, but we can keep 2D Classic prominent and add more 2D-mode variants if there's demand.

Can I make the game accessible for someone with motor impairments?

The accelerometer-only input is genuinely limiting for some players. We don't currently offer a touch-only fallback, and that's worth flagging — if this affects you, email us; if there's demand we'll prioritise a touch-input mode for the next major version.

The visual presentation should work fine with iOS / Android system accessibility features (Reduce Motion, Increase Contrast, Bold Text). The game respects the system Reduce Motion preference for menu animations.

Is the game safe to play with a phone screen close to my face?

Twist and Turn Quest doesn't require waving your phone around — gentle wrist tilts of ~15° each direction are plenty. Don't play while walking, cycling, driving, or operating any machinery, please. And give yourself enough space that an excited swing of the phone can't damage anything nearby.

Reporting a bug

The fastest path to a fix.

Tell us what you saw

A one-line description of the bug, plus the screen or mode you were on. Screenshots help — they take five seconds and save us hours.

Tell us what you expected

This is the part bug reports skip most often, and it's the most useful. "I expected the next level to load" + "instead the app froze on the win screen" is gold.

Tell us your device

Phone model, OS version, and Twist and Turn Quest version. Even just "iPhone 14, iOS 17.4, app v2.0" cuts diagnosis time in half.
