ToolTrunk does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data. Every measurement happens on your device. We use Google AdMob to display banner ads, which may collect limited data (advertising identifier, IP, app interaction) as described below — you can opt out at any time.
Who we are
ToolTrunk is developed by PlayPal Apps. This policy describes how the ToolTrunk mobile application ("the App") handles information on your device and through the third-party advertising service we use to keep the App free.
What the app itself collects
ToolTrunk itself collects no personal information. All instrument readings — bubble level angles, compass headings, decibel measurements, ruler distances, protractor angles — are computed entirely on your device and are never sent to our servers or any third party. We do not operate any servers that receive your measurements.
Locally stored data
The App stores a few small preferences locally on your device only:
- Theme preference: Your light/dark mode choice and accent color
- Unit preference: Whether the ruler shows metric or imperial
- Haptic feedback toggle
- Calibration offsets: Spirit level zero-point and ruler pixels-per-millimetre, set when you calibrate
- Onboarding state: A simple flag so you only see the welcome screen once
- Ad-consent state: Your consent choice (only if you are in the EEA, UK, or Switzerland)
This data never leaves your device and is cleared when you uninstall the App.
Device permissions we request
The App requests the minimum permissions needed for the tools to work. Each is locally processed and never transmitted.
- Microphone — used by the Sound Meter tool to read ambient decibel levels. Audio is sampled to compute a decibel number and immediately discarded; no recording is made, saved, or sent anywhere.
- Location (iOS only) — Apple's CoreLocation framework bundles compass heading with location services. The App reads heading only; no location coordinates are stored, logged, or transmitted. (Android reads the magnetometer directly and requires no permission.)
- Camera flash / torch — used by the Flashlight tool to turn on the LED. No camera image is captured.
Any of these permissions can be revoked at any time in your device settings; the corresponding tool simply won't function until you re-grant them.
Advertising (Google AdMob)
The App is free and supported by banner advertisements served via Google AdMob. AdMob may collect and process certain data to serve and measure ads, including:
- Device advertising identifier (IDFA on iOS, AAID on Android)
- IP address
- Approximate location (country / region level, inferred from IP)
- Device information (model, OS version, screen size, language)
- App-interaction data with the ads (impressions, clicks)
This data is collected and processed directly by Google in accordance with Google's Privacy Policy and the AdMob terms. We do not see your individual ad data — we only receive aggregate revenue reports.
Ad personalization & opt-out
Google may use the data collected through AdMob to show personalized ads. You can opt out of personalized advertising at any time:
- iOS: Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking → disable tracking for ToolTrunk. iOS will also send a one-time App Tracking Transparency prompt the first time AdMob requests the tracking identifier.
- Android: Settings → Google → Ads → "Opt out of Ads Personalization" (or "Delete advertising ID" on Android 13+).
- In-app (EEA/UK/CH): Tap the privacy options entry inside the App settings to revisit your consent choice at any time.
If you opt out, you will still see ads — they will simply be non-personalized (less relevant to you).
Consent & GDPR (EEA, UK, Switzerland)
If you are located in the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, or Switzerland, the App complies with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the ePrivacy Directive.
On first launch (and any time you revisit it via App settings), you will see a consent dialog powered by Google's IAB-certified Consent Management Platform (User Messaging Platform). You can:
- Consent to data processing for personalized advertising and content
- Manage options to selectively allow or deny specific data-processing purposes and vendors
- Decline personalized data processing entirely
Your consent choice is stored locally on your device and can be changed at any time from the App's settings screen.
Legal basis for processing (GDPR)
For users in the EEA, UK, and Switzerland, the legal basis for processing personal data through advertising is:
- Consent (Article 6(1)(a) GDPR): For personalized advertising, ad measurement, content personalization, and storage of information on your device. Consent is collected via the consent management platform before any data processing occurs.
- Legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR): For non-personalized advertising (frequency capping, ad serving, basic fraud prevention) when you decline personalized advertising.
Your data rights (GDPR & CCPA)
You have rights regarding your personal data:
- Right of access: Request information about what data is processed about you
- Right to rectification: Request correction of inaccurate data
- Right to erasure: Request deletion of your data
- Right to restrict processing: Request limitation of data processing
- Right to data portability: Receive your data in a portable format
- Right to object: Object to processing based on legitimate interests
- Right to withdraw consent: Withdraw your consent at any time without affecting the lawfulness of prior processing
- Right to opt out of "sale" / "sharing" (CCPA/CPRA): California residents can opt out via the ad-consent settings in-app or via Google's controls
Since ToolTrunk does not collect personal data directly, these rights primarily apply to data collected by Google AdMob. You can exercise these rights through Google's Privacy Controls, the in-app consent dialog, or by contacting us at playpalapps2024@gmail.com.
Third-party services
The only third-party service the App connects to is:
- Google AdMob — for serving advertisements. Privacy Policy · How Google uses information
No other analytics, crash reporting, or tracking SDKs are bundled with the App.
Children's privacy
ToolTrunk is not directed at children under 13 (or under 16 in the EEA). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. AdMob is configured to comply with COPPA and the Designed for Families program where applicable.
Data security
Because ToolTrunk does not collect or transmit personal data itself, there is no app-side server breach risk. Locally stored preferences are protected by your device's standard application sandboxing. Data transmitted to AdMob is encrypted in transit by Google.
Data retention
PlayPal Apps does not retain any personal data on its servers. Locally stored preferences (theme, calibration, consent state) persist on your device until you clear the app data or uninstall the App. For data retained by Google AdMob, refer to Google's data retention policy.
International data transfers
Google AdMob may process data in countries outside your country of residence, including the United States. Such transfers rely on Google's Standard Contractual Clauses and other safeguards as described in Google's framework page.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The current version always lives at https://playpalapps.github.io/ToolTrunk/privacy-policy.html. Material changes will be reflected in the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
