Controls
How do I play?
Use the pad at the bottom left: the right arrow runs, the left arrow walks back, and letting go makes Pip stand still. Tap anywhere on the right half of the screen to jump; hold the tap for a higher jump. Clear every hazard to reach the goal flag before your lives run out.
Can I stop, or go backwards?
Yes, just like the arcade classics. Let go of the pad to wait, for example for a fire-breather's flame to die down, or hold the left arrow to back away. The screen never scrolls backwards, so its left edge is as far as you can retreat.
Is there a one-thumb mode?
Yes. In Options change Controls to Tap Anywhere. Pip then runs by himself: tap to jump, hold the left side of the screen to wait (keep holding to walk back), and hold the right side to sprint for a bigger time bonus. Sprinting is never needed to finish an act.
The buttons are too small
In Options set Button Size to Large. The arrows and the Jump button all grow.
How do I pause?
Tap the pause button at the top right. On Android, the back button also pauses. The game pauses by itself if you switch apps or get a call.
The five acts
Act 1, Lion & Fire
Be in the air when a flaming hoop reaches you and you sail through it. Hop the fire pots on the ground. A money bag inside a hoop is worth grabbing on the way.
Act 2, The Tightrope
Jump the monkeys; the ones in red hats hop, so wait for them to land. You cannot sprint on a rope, but if you keep the jump held while in the air Pip floats, which is how you clear two monkeys that are far apart.
Act 3, Trampolines
Run off a pedestal onto a trampoline to bounce to the next one. Tap just as you land for a super bounce. Stand still to wait out a fire-breather, and jump the knives.
Act 4, Horseback
Jump the hurdles and the small fire pits. Ride onto a springboard to clear a brick wall. When you see the blinking arrow sign, a wide fire pit is coming: keep running onto the springboard at its edge and it launches you all the way across.
Act 5, The Trapeze
Tap to let go of the bar. The next bar is lit in yellow with an arrow above it. On your first time through, that bar flashes and "NOW!" appears whenever letting go would land you on it.
What are the flags?
Checkpoints. Lose a life and you restart from the last flag you passed, not from the beginning of the act.
Modes, scoring and difficulty
What are the four modes?
Arcade plays the five acts in order and then loops, harder each time. Endless serves random acts with rising difficulty. Daily gives everyone the same course for the day. Practice replays any act you have already reached in Arcade.
How does scoring work?
You score for every hazard you clear and every money bag or balloon you collect. Clearing hazards in a row builds a combo that multiplies your points, up to five times. Each act also pays a time bonus that ticks down while you play, and a No Miss bonus if you finish it without losing a life.
How do I earn extra lives?
You get one at 30,000 points and another every 60,000 points after that.
The game is too hard (or too easy)
Every time you start Arcade, Endless or Practice the game asks you to choose a level. Easy gives five lives, a slower pace, hoops and hazards much further apart and only one at a time for most of each act, and on the trapeze the bar always flashes when it is safe to let go. Normal gives four lives. Hard gives three lives and tight courses. Daily always uses Normal so that everyone's score is comparable. The same choice is in Options under Difficulty.
Sound, display and settings
There is no sound at all
On iPhone, check the ring/silent switch on the side of the phone: Circus Arcade follows it, like most games. Also check the device volume, and that Music and Sound FX are turned up in Options.
How do I change the volume?
Options has separate Music and Sound FX levels from 0 to 10. Both start at 7.
What are scanlines, and can I turn them off?
They are the faint horizontal lines of an old arcade monitor. Turn Scanlines off in Options for a clean picture. Screen Shake and Haptics can be switched off there too.
What is the Display setting?
Fill Screen uses the whole display. Pixel Perfect keeps every pixel exactly square, which can leave thin black borders on some devices.
Privacy and data
Does Circus Arcade collect anything?
No. The game has no accounts, no ads and no tracking, and it does not use the internet. The only things saved are your scores and settings, on the device. See the privacy policy.
How do I clear the rankings?
Open Options, choose Reset Scores, and choose it again when it asks "SURE?". That clears the rankings and your best scores for each act. Uninstalling the app removes everything, including settings.
Can I move my scores to a new phone?
Not at the moment. Scores live only on the device, which is also why nothing about you is ever stored anywhere else.
Purchases and refunds
Is there anything to buy inside the game?
No. You pay once for the game. There are no in-app purchases and no ads.
How do I get a refund?
Purchases are handled by Apple and Google, so refunds go through them. On iPhone and iPad use reportaproblem.apple.com. On Android use the Google Play order history at play.google.com/store/account/orderhistory.
